Chinese EV Giant BYD Unveils Ultra-Fast Charging Tech — 400KM From 5-Minute Charge
Chinese automaker $BYDDF ( ▲ 3.24% ) (Build Your Dreams) has announced a significant breakthrough in EV charging, their new “super e-platform” could make recharging as fast as refuelling with petrol.
The new technology delivers peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW), adding 400km (249 miles) in just five minutes.
In the latest blow to Elon Musk, that’s twice as fast as $TSLA ( ▼ 2.68% ) 500kW Superchargers...
In the medium term, this has the potential to be a game-changer for global EV adoption (when rolled out) with charging/range anxiety a persistent concern.
Zooming out:
Over the last few years BYD has been eating Tesla’s lunch.
In 2024, BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s largest EV producer, producing 1.778m units vs Tesla's 1.774m units.
And now they have better charging tech...
They’ve also announced their Zhengzhou super-factory, which is set to be 10x bigger than Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas.
And that's being reflected in the stock market, with BYD shares +42% year-to-date ($159B market cap), while Tesla has dropped -39% ($700B market cap).
